Elevating her passion in agricultural technology, Febbie Kandaya a young lady 30 years of age and holder of a bachelor’s degree in engineering is the owner and runs an agribusiness called “Charis farms” located in Dowa district Malawi. Phoebe stands in as a change maker through imparting technological skills and knowledge to members of her community.
Febbie’s journey venturing in Agriculture started in the year 2020 with the aim of creating job opportunities for young people and contributing to promotion of food security. With a great passion in Agriculture, she quitted her job to begin her agribusiness venture, which she operates and works as a full-time farmer now. Through her exposure in the GIZ, EYA!ATVET project as one of the role models for image campaign, she prioritizes this opportunity to engage and encourage youths to adopt technological farming.
Mainly, she uses solar irrigation farming to promote technological farming techniques and agricultural productivity. Through agribusiness practices horticultural farming and supplies a variety of crop and fruits including vegetables, tomatoes, peppers(green, red and yellow), onions, sweet potatoes as well as legumes such as maize and rice. In addition, Phoebe also has a banana plantation and grows other types of fruits including mangoes, oranges and apples.
Febbie is well known for her focus in making farming tech savvy using her technological expertise where she mainly relies on solar irrigation to cultivate crops as well as the usage of digital apps e.g., Plantix. Mainly her aim is to promote a hub of opportunities in providing hands-on experience, skills and knowledge in technological farming to young local farmers in her community. Charis farms serves as a platform for trainings where young people are acquainted with knowledge and skills in agricultural technology of which in return replicate in their fields. Successfully, she has managed to train over 90 local farmers from her community on different farming practices. Additionally, she has managed to employ 30 young people to support through the work and operations of the farm.
Looking back at her journey in agribusiness, Febbie has been successful therefore invests the profit returns to purchase more equipment to maximize the usage of technological agriculture. Independently, she makes enough sales and is able to support herself and family through providing her child with quality education.
Undeniably, there are prevailing challenges that have contributed Febbie to capitalize on more sustainable ways and practices in Agriculture. One of the biggest challenges is climate change which has affected rainfall patterns and production. Through the use of solar irrigation, she has been able to mitigate the challenges of the scarcity of water. In addition, to increase productivity of quality produce, she makes compost manure to preserve nutrients and promote soil fertility in order to have a bumper harvest in dry season.
In the years to come, Phoebe envisions expanding her farm to more than 16 hectares with the intent of producing more farm products. In achieving her dreams, she plans on being one of the leading major contributors towards exporting farm products within and outside Malawi countries. Apart from this, she plans on starting bee keeping farming and venture into honey business as a way of expanding her agribusiness potentials.
