Commuters Struggle With Rising Costs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For daily commuters like Chimwemwe Banda, who travels from Ntandile to Area 25 in Lilongwe, the hike has been devastating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bus fares that once stood at K1,500 per trip have skyrocketed overnight, forcing Banda and others to choose between walking long distances to work or spending more on transport at the expense of feeding their families.<\/p>\n\n\n Businesses Adjust Prices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The ripple effect is also hitting small businesses. Hardware shop owner Kalari Mbewe from Ntandile explains that transport costs for ordering goods have jumped from K30,000 to as high as K50,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To stay afloat, he and other shop owners across cities like Mzuzu, Zomba, and Blantyre have had no choice but to raise prices passing the burden onto consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Experts and Activists Weigh In<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Economic analyst Chris Mbukwa says the sharp rise in goods and services was expected following the fuel adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, he cautions service providers against exploiting the situation by overcharging customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mbukwa has urged government agencies to monitor the market closely to protect vulnerable citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Youth rights activist Amos Chibwana echoes these concerns, warning that young entrepreneurs will be particularly affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has called on the government to ease loan conditions for youth and underprivileged groups to help cushion the blow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Governance commentator Peter Mumba adds that while the government may be mobilizing resources for national projects, strict monitoring of the APM is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He notes that countries like Malawi often struggle to fully adhere to the system, especially when global fuel prices decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Government\u2019s Position<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n MERA Board Chairperson Lucas Kondowe explained that the hike was triggered by rising landed costs of petrol and diesel, which exceeded the five percent threshold under the APM.<\/p>\n\n\n Minister Mathanga further argued that the previously fixed pricing system created foreign exchange shortages and debts among fuel importers, leading to supply disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe suspension of the APM led to the accumulation of debts among fuel importing companies, resulting in limited fuel supply across the country,\u201d Mathanga said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite government assurances that the APM will stabilize fuel supply and support socio-economic development, public sentiment remains uneasy.
