Born in a family of farmers, Clement Taonani is a young agri-preneur, 30 years of age with a bachelor\u2019s degree in nursing and midwifery. Standing as a driving force in his community he serves as a lead farmer and a change maker popularly known for biochar making. Embarking on this agri-business venture, he is the founder and owner of a multipurpose farm called Nthawi Farms which was established in 2020.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Clement\u2019s journey as a successful farmer started after he completed his studies in search of an employment opportunity. Due to lack of capital and resources, he sold his mobile phone for 75 Euros and used the money to rent a piece of land, as such a new beginning as a farmer had begun. In 2021, he participated in the start -up acceleration program organized by GIZ,\u00a0 EYA!ATVET. This program exposed him to \u00a0new knowledge in agribusiness including financial management which has contributed Nthawi farms\u2019 growth.<\/p>

With a view to promote a more sustainable environment through agroecology and increase food production, he ventured into biochar fertilizer making business, solar irrigation and organic farming. Mainly, he produces biochar, a product which is made from carbonized and activated waste matter gathered locally. Through a wide diversity of farming ranging from horticultural farming, he\u00a0 cultivates\u00a0 vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, bananas, sugarcanes and grows different types of legumes e.g. maize and rice as his target crops. Apart from this, he also practices livestock farming and owns 75 cows, 130 pigs, goats, local chickens, ducks, rabbits, sheep, guineafowls, turkeys and pekins.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Biochar fertilizer also improves fertile soils, maintains moisture and nutrients when used. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the last growing season year 2022, Clement produced 10,000 tons of biochar which part of it was applied on his farm with the other half sold locally \u00a0for business. To generate income, he sells a 50kg bag of biochar at 5 Euros. As part of using this organic fertilizer he has managed to harvest 12,000 bags of maize which he sells as 30 Euros per a 50 kg bag. Similarly, he also has harvested 3,000 bags of unpolished rice which he sells at 40 Euros per a 50 kg bag.\u00a0 In addition to his agribusinesses he also sells smoked pork, vegetables, fresh meat and milk as well as fruits mainly to community members as his potential customers. By promoting easy access to services in his community, Clement owns a maize mill that is accessed at a low cost and prioritizes the use of millet (waste remnants) for feed and organic manure.<\/p>

Nthawi farms serves more than just an agricultural venture; it is importantly a hub for community development through providing access to local markets as well as creation of employment opportunities. Through this Clement has marked a positive impact in his community and youths through employing 75 seasonal laborers and 30 permanent employees. Additionally, he hosts interns from different universities including Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) and Mwimba College of Agriculture, \u00a0particularly for internship and research programs\u00a0 as a way of increasing skills and knowledge for students.<\/p>

Inevitably, Clement\u2019s journey has been marked by several challenges. Looking back at his journey, capital was a problem as well as securing grants and loans to finance his agribusinesses. Through the trainings attained from EYA! ATVET,\u00a0 he managed to maximize his potentials in granting funds and managing finances. Climate change being the major problem with irresistible scarcity of water and harsh weather affects his productivity as well. Through the usage of solar irrigation, water is easily made accessible yearly round and through the practice of organic farming his productivity increases highly.<\/p>

In the years to come, Clement Tawonani envisions on expanding Nthawi farms in different districts in Malawi to increase food production and creation of employment opportunities in Agriculture to youths and his community. In addition, to increase food production and sustainability, the young farmer intends on venturing into syntropic farming to preserve food and stock all year round. Agribusiness has proven to be a great deal in improving his livelihood and community\u2019s well-being. The production of biochar fertilizer revolves around a cycle of production from the daily farming activities with the usage of degradable wastes, livestock dung, human faeces and urine harvested from a unique fashioned compost toilet.
