Eneless Lazarus is a young woman aged 31 who comes from Mikili Village, Traditional Authority Kasakula, Ntchisi district. Growing up in a family of farmers, I always had passion for agricultural entrepreneurship. My venture into agroecological farming started in December 2022 where I developed interest to start running agribusinesses.
With exposure to the Kusamala Institute of Agriculture’s trainings, supported by GIZ EYA! ATVET, the young farmer drew inspiration to venture into agribusiness. Through these agroecological trainings she managed to acquire knowledge and skills in organic manure making, herbal production including juices and powders, organic pesticides and charcoal briquette making. As a young farmer she practices horticultural farming and grows vegetables, tomatoes, herbal plants as well as legumes such as maize , groundnuts and beans as the target crops. In addition she rears livestock such as goats and chickens which contributes to the supply of local manure. Eneless runs several agribusinesses and focuses on selling vegetables, tomatoes, herbal powders from hibiscus, moringa, guava as well as herbal juices from mango and guava, manure, organic pesticides and briquettes. Currently, surrounding community members are her target customers and source of a reliable market.
Through the participation in the trainings, she managed to acquire knowledge and skills in agroecological practices and conservation of the environment which has helped her adopt more ways in succumbing challenges faced in the community. One of the persistent challenges they face every year is uncertain change of climate, outbreak of pests and diseases and land degradation. Eneless continues to stand out as one of the most reliable women through her resilience in adopting more agroecological practices and being innovative in contributing to positive change in her community. With her capacity, she imparts knowledge and skills to other women and youths within her community whom she offers hands on experience in briquette making, liquid organic manure making, herbal juice and powder production as well as organic pesticides making. Youths in her community look up to Eneless as one of their role models and source substantial expertise in organic farming to develop themselves.
Agribusiness has benefited Eneless a lot in improving her income to support her family with necessary needs and provide her children with education. Specifically, Eneless produces a maximum of 100kgs of manure collected locally from her livestock of which returns profit of 20 euros every month. Similarly, she produces 30 kgs of briquettes of which she sells at 7 euros weekly. In addition, she sells 5 kgs of herbal powders and 5 liters of juices from which she makes a profit of 58 euros monthly. As her overall income, Eneless manages to make profits totaling to85 Euros per month.
Eneless’s 2 years journey in agribusiness has been marked by several achievements from the profits she makes out of the sales. To maximize her income, she intends on accessing more land to increase her productivity to be able to employ fellow youths and young women. Similarly, she has been able to procure bricks and iron sheets to construct a chicken coop in order to increase livestock productivity. Apart from running agribusinesses, she has invested part of income she gains to support other businesses she locally runs in the community.
In the years to come, Eneless plans on increasing the agricultural productivity through expanding her business through packaging of well processed products and creating partnerships with more likeminded partnerships. To build her businesses she continues to search more reliable markets outside her community to maximize the accessibility of the products. Lastly, as part of her vision, she intends on encouraging and reaching out to more youths and women in her community to contribute to conserving the environment through exploring more agroecological practices to increase agricultural productivity.
“My dream is to engage my fellow youths and young women in my community to contribute in conserving the environment through agroecological practices ”
